LEATHER TERMINOLOGY

Leather – natural skins, which have been tanned (processed)

Tanning – is a method which stabilizes and sanitizes skins. Either a “chrome” or a “vegetable” tanning process is used

Full Grain – is a completely naturally grained surface finish or texture which shows the true characteristics of the skins – higher cost.

Hide – generally refers to lower grade top grain or split leather – lower cost.

Split leather – section of leather is split or cut from the flesh side of the top grain to enable a reduction of thickness – the surface finish of this is traditionally hand brushed or until recently polyeurathane coated.

Genuine leather – all of the above which are individual animal skins are classified as genuine or real leathers.

SYNTHETIC LEATHER AND LEATHER LOOK

Bonded or Reconstituted leather – this is a synthesized material whose normal latex backing is impregnated with reclaimed leather fibers (which vary in content dependant on the manufacturer). The surface finish is usually a polyureathane laminate and is produced in sheets or rolls.

Leather-look / Coskin / Leatherette / Synthetic leather – these are either PVC or polyureathane surface film laminated to a fabric backing – comes in rolls – can have leather appearance that may be difficult to detect.

PERFORMANCE FEATURES

Genuine leather / Real leather – is a tanned natural skin which has touch, fell aroma, permeability and abrasion resistance which cannon be duplicated.

Bonded / Synthetic Leather – cost effective synthesized materials that has the appearance and may have some of the characteristics of genuine leather.
